Whats on in Year 1
Term Three has been a busy and exciting time for Year 1 so far! We have celebrated Book Week and Science Week, as well as engaging in a wide variety of explicit learning experiences in class.

In Religious Education, students have been learning about Jesus’ ministry to share love, kindness and forgiveness. We also learnt about the Assumption of Mary, hosting our Whole School Mass in Week 4. This Mass was followed by a special classroom visit by our wonderful Grandparents. Year 1 was very proud to share their work samples with our guests.

In English, students have been composing ‘super sentences’ during writing lessons, identifying the subject and verb predicate in a sentence, as well as adding adjectives and adverbs to create more interesting and engaging texts.
We have been very fortunate to have our amazing reading volunteers each Monday and Friday. Our volunteers help orientate our students with their weekly class and home readers. We are so grateful for their support! We have also been engaging in Paired Fluency Reading 3 times a week. It is a privilege to observe our young readers supporting each other to become more confident and fluent readers.

In Mathematics, students are doing an amazing job using High Impact Teaching Practices when participating in Daily Review and Explicit Lessons. Students record and share their learning on whiteboards during whole class instruction and modelled/shared learning, before completing independent learning tasks. In Weeks 1-5 we focused on addition and subtraction. For the second half of the term, we have turned our attention to multiplication and division. Students are enjoying the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning experiences, including creating groups and arrays with self-made play dough!
In Science, Year 1 have been participating in lessons about Earth and Space with Mrs Ziegler. Students are highly engaged in the many hands-on learning experiences within the program!

In PDHPE Students have been participating in the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Program. We have been discussing the importance of recognising, reacting to and reporting unsafe behaviours.
In History and Dhurga we have been investigating time, developing an understanding of the distinction between the past, present and future. Students have also been learning about the seasons from both European and Indigenous perspectives with the support of Mr Nolan.

In CAPA students investigated the bold use of block colours by artist Matthew Wong. Year 1 created vivid artworks inspired by Matthew Wong’s masterpiece ‘The Long and Winding Road’.

Year 1 are looking forward to further showcasing their learning during our Assembly on Thursday in Week 9. We hope to see you there!
